Welcome

Welcome to St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, a theologically progressive and inclusive Christ-centered community of faith.

St. Francis is known for its welcome and hospitality of the young, old, and the young at heart. We are a community of compassion and acceptance with a commitment to exploring and deepening our faith. Inspired by our patron saint, Francis, we have a hunger for justice and peace in the world. St. Clare's, our outdoor chapel, is always open for prayer and meditation.

If you prefer walking meditation our outdoor labyrinth is the place to still your soul. Our Sunday morning service draws on the ancient and modern practices of the Episcopal Church. We look forward to welcoming you in person.

St. Francis, an Episcopal Church in the Diocese of California, is nestled beneath a breathtaking canopy of oaks in downtown Novato on 5th Street just south of Grant Avenue.

St. Francis Episcopal Church in Novato is accepting applications for Director of Music.

Start date:  January 1, 2018 -or until filled - CLICK HERE to download application.

St. Francis of Assisi is an Episcopal congregation with approximately 80 members located in Novato, California, 25 miles north of San Francisco. Music is an important component of the mission and ministry of the parish. The Director of Music is a ministry staff position responsible for the vitality of music as an essential component of worship. In the Episcopal Church, the Rector (priest in charge of the congregation) has primary authority for all aspects of worship. At St. Francis, the Director of Music works collaboratively with the Rector to achieve: a high quality of instrumental and choral musical presentation, interaction of music with other elements of liturgy, nurture and growth of the choir, and the support and increase of the congregation's appreciation and participation in worship music.

St. Francis has one Sunday service held at 10:00 am. The choir is small but committed, with 10 members.  The music director will be able to: select music based upon the Episcopal calendar liturgy, play piano and organ, and teach and direct the choir.  The congregation enjoys a wide variety of music from contemporary to classical.  The choir rehearses once during the week and prior to services on Sunday morning. Rehearsal times can be flexible but have historically been held on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday at 7:00.

We would like to see our music ministry continue to grow, with the possible inclusion of: a hosted music series, use of the church for local school performances, a children's choir, and interaction with our onsite pre-school. We are interested in hiring a music director who would like to build relationships with other musicians in the community, churches and schools, to raise the visibility of the church and encourage membership.

The Director of Music position is considered a quarter time position (approximately 8 hours per week). Salary will conform to AGO guidelines for a quarter time position ($18,000 annually). Health insurance benefits are not provided. The Director is welcome to utilize the church choir room and/or sanctuary as a ‘home base’ to provide music lessons or as an office.

  • Provide choral, and possibly instrumental, music for the following special holy days throughout the year: Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil (Easter Eve), Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and the Feast of St. Francis (Blessing of the Animals)
  • Subject to availability, provide organ music for parish weddings and funerals (separate stipend; not a regular occurrence)

  •  Ensure that the administrative staff have copies of the selected music in time for inclusion in the weekly bulletin
